Fiji has reported a record number of Covid deaths in the past week, including two pregnant women. The country is struggling to contain a serious outbreak Of the virus.
A total of 21 people died between July 14th and 20th. State Health Minister James Fong said.. From Wednesday 24 hours to 8 am, an additional 1,091 new Covid cases were identified.
Both pregnant women arrived at the hospital last week suffering from severe dyspnea and were evaluated by experts who decided to perform an emergency caesarean section, Fong said.
The baby survived, but “sadly, despite the doctor’s best efforts, both mothers died,” he said.

Fiji largely avoided pandemics until April this year. A cluster linked to a quarantine facility has emerged.. Since then, the country has recorded more than 20,000 cases and 144 deaths. Over the past week, the average daily test positive rate for 7 days was 27.5%.
“Given the rapidly evolving situation, our team has re-prioritized 24 hours a day, with people at highest risk of serious Covid-19 and death: the elderly, people with pre-existing medical conditions, pregnant women. We strive to ensure that we protect ourselves, “Fon said.
“These changes include changes in testing services, home quarantine guidance, confirmation of providing life-saving care to the most endangered people, and establishment of vaccinations for pregnant women.”
Although only 14% of Fijians are fully vaccinated, more than 400,000 of the nearly 900,000 population are initially vaccinated.
