Oklahoma Physician Concerned About Abnormal Summer Spikes In RSV Cases
Currently, cases of respiratory syncytial virus are on the rise, and some Oklahoma doctors say the period is unusually high.
According to doctors at the Hillcrest Medical Center, RSV usually spikes in winter, so it’s strange to see more cases in July.
“I thought it was a little cold,” said Kaitlan Alderman. “He got worse.”
According to city councilors, Maddox, 10 months old, had a runny nose, cough, and fever earlier this month. He was diagnosed with pneumonia, ear infections, and RSV.
“I have it in mid-July, it’s a bit weird,” she said.
Maddox is currently recovering, but Alderman said her other son, Asher, had a bad case of RSV in 2019 after the doctor first told her that she had asthma.
“She tested him again and it returned to positive,” Alderman said. “He was hospitalized for a week with oxygen.”
“Almost every child gets it at least once by the age of two,” said Dr. Jeff Johnson.
Johnson, a doctor in the Hillcrest Emergency Department, said there was usually a surge in RSV cases in the winter. RSV was much lower last year because everyone was masked and stayed inside, but now when people go out again, they see more cases than usual, he said.
“It was really weird this winter because I didn’t see any cases of it,” said Dr. Johnson. “Now we are looking at what we see in the summer and winter. It’s about contact, distance to people, and sharing of drinks. The primary purpose of RSV is to suck your nose and breathe better. Is to do. “
The city council said he was pleased that Maddox was getting better and wanted other parents to notice.
“I’m so happy that he’s a happy baby now,” Alderman said.
