Washington plunges into fifth COVID-19 wave as cases of delta variants surge
Seattle-Washington concludes the week with a surge in delta variants, effectively placing the state in the “fifth wave” of COVID cases.

“Approximately two months after the decline, the trajectory of COVID outbreaks changed,” said Dr. Jeffrey Duchin, a public health officer in Seattle and King County.
Despite high vaccination rates in King County, cases of COVID have increased significantly, with the latest data showing that 80% of eligible individuals received their first vaccination.
At a briefing on Friday, Duchin said last week alone, there were 233 new cases daily in King County. This is a 63% increase from last week.
He pointed out a delta variant that has spread significantly throughout Washington and elsewhere in the United States.
“It’s much more contagious than previous variants, which makes it easier and faster for people to get infected and spread the virus to others,” Duchin said.
Following the rise in COVID infections, Duchin added that hospitalizations may be on a traditional uptrend, but remain stable.
COVID-related hospitalization rates have risen slightly across the state compared to last month, according to the latest data from the Washington State Health Department’s Data Dashboard.
In this week’s latest COVID briefing, Governor Jay Inslee talks about the possibility of rollbacks and mask mandates, rather than the current mask recommendations for people vaccinated and unvaccinated indoors in public. It remained ambiguous.
“I don’t have a lot of money to guess what’s going to happen, but I’ll tell you this, I don’t want to shut down a single business in Washington,” Inslee said.
