The Butte-Silver Bow Health Department on Tuesday reported that county residents had died from complications associated with COVID-19. The death toll is 87th in the county associated with the virus.

The announcement is in the midst of a surge in COVID-19 cases in Butte-Silver Bow, Montana, and parts of the United States.
Butte Silver Bow Health Doctor Karen Sullivan said 41 COVID-19 cases have been identified in the county since July 27, 34 of which are still active. On Tuesday, officials from the Montana Department of Public Health and Welfare announced 402 new confirmed cases across the state.
According to Sullivan, DPHHS publishes county-specific data related to the COVID-19 variant every Wednesday. Health doctors said one case of a highly contagious COVID-19 delta mutant has been identified in Butte-Silver Bow and is expected to increase in number.
“A delta variant that is up to 222% more contagious than the original alpha of COVID-19 has become a reality,” says Sullivan. “We have been working to get vaccinated ahead of Delta and other variants, but Delta seems to be ahead of our vaccination efforts,” Sullivan said. Only 58% of the Butte-Silver Bow eligible population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
As of noon on Tuesday, six were admitted to St. James Healthcare with COVID-19 and two were admitted to the hospital’s intensive care unit. Of the six people between the ages of 35 and 70, only one was vaccinated before admission, Sullivan said.
