Outbreak of COVID-19 declared at Campbell River Care Home as British Columbia cases increase
The outbreak was declared at Discovery Harbor’s long-term care facility on Campbell River, and three staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
Island Health said Wednesday that residents were experiencing no symptoms.
The three staff are independent at home.
Discovery Harbor is owned and operated by Park Place Senior Living. Island Health works with the facility to identify people who may have been exposed to the virus.
Hospitalization and transfers were withheld during the outbreak, and social visits were restricted, health officials said. Intensified cleaning measures are in place and all staff and residents are screened for symptoms twice daily.
As the daily number of cases in British Columbia continued to grow, a total of 32 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the Island Health area on Wednesday. The 342 new infections reported on Wednesday are the highest since late May. There are currently 1,764 known active infections, including 55 hospitalized. One is in an island health hospital.
No new deaths have been reported.
Half of the latest cases were diagnosed in interior health areas, with more than 53% of active cases.
Active cases in the Fraser Health area increased from 40 to 388 on the final day, and active cases in the Vancouver coastal health area increased from 46 to 258. In the Northern Health area, there were a total of 13 new cases. 52 active cases.
The Ministry of Health said in a statement that 81.5 percent of eligible residents received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and nearly 68 percent received the COVID-19 vaccine twice.
