Hoboken city council wants the city to give the bar an incentive to allow only vaccinated patrons
It hasn’t taken things to New York City, but what is it?
Hoboken City Council members recommend that the city provide financial incentives to bars that deny people access unless they can prove that they are vaccinated against the coronavirus.
Michael Defsco, with its many downtown bars and restaurants in Firstward, encourages Mayor Ravi Barra to create a program as a means of facilitating implementation rather than going through a legislative process with the city council.
DeFusco’s recommended financial incentives are city fee exemptions, such as those required to rent outdoor dining space.
“Encouraging companies that are willing to take additional steps to prevent the spread of this virus, especially crowded bars, is a victory for both public health and safety in our city and achieves its goals. We will provide further relief to SMEs struggling with the past year and a half, “De Fusco said in a press release.
Mr. Rose said he would consider “any initiative to increase vaccination rates,” but has not yet told business leaders about the idea.
Of the 46 new COVID-19 cases from July 23 to 30, 23 were people between the ages of 17 and 30. City officials said at the end of July that 62% of the population had been fully vaccinated and 68% had been vaccinated at least once.
The Mad Hatter Bar manager on Washington Street said fake vaccination cards could undermine the effectiveness of such policies.
“What’s our point even to check if it’s there?” He said.
Jim McCue, who owns Texas Arizona and 80 River, had the same problem with this idea.
“I now have enough time to make sure people are 21 years old with fake IDs around the town,” McCue said.
He was also concerned about whether the policy would be racist if vaccination rates were uneven among races.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced this week that patrons at bars and gyms in the city will need to show proof of vaccination.
Last week, Hoboken announced financial incentives for companies where 75% of its employees are vaccinated.
The city is distributing a $ 1.8 million grant to small businesses with funding from the Federal Coronavirus Relief American Rescue Plan. Companies that meet the 75% employee vaccination rate are eligible for bonus funding.
