Utahns, be careful! We are waiting for mosquitoes infected with West Nile virus to bite you.
There have been no human cases so far in Utah in 2021, but many mosquitoes carry the virus.

No cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Utah this year, but that doesn’t mean mosquitoes haven’t tried.
According to the Utah Department of Health, mosquitoes collected from 114 traps in the state tested positive for the virus. In short, Utah is a bit away from potentially deadly illness.
“The West Nile virus exists every year in Utah and never goes away,” said UDOH epidemiologist Hannah Letler. “Although the number of human cases has declined in recent years, it is important to understand that the West Nile virus is colonizing mosquito populations in the state.”
Utah has had an average of 12 cases of West Nile virus annually since 2009, Mr. Letler said. There were 21 cases in 2019 and 2 cases in 2020.
West Nile virus killed six Utines in 2017. Hillcrest High School football coach Kazy Brown, I had meningitis after a West Nile fever positive test.Another Utah Died in 2018, When The other died in 2019.
This year, Utahns may be infected and unaware of it. Most people with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms. People who develop symptoms may experience headaches, body pain, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and rashes.
According to UDOH, less than 1% of infected people develop serious neurological disorders such as meningitis.
Department recommends:
• Wear long sleeves, long pants and socks outdoors and use 20% to 30% DEET insect repellent.
• Avoid outdoor activities from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
• Make sure the doors, windows and screens are in good condition and fit tightly.
• Remove water that collects near your house. This includes puddles, pet dishes, flower pots, play and pools, buckets, tarpaulins, and tire water.
• Report stagnant water masses to locals Mosquito control area..
