Guinea has recorded the first Marburg virus death in West Africa, WHO said

Conakry, August 9 (Reuters)-Guinean health officials have confirmed the death of one person from the Marburg virus, a highly infectious hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola, the World Health Organization said Monday.

This is the first time a fatal disease has been identified in West Africa. Since 1967, there have been 12 major Marburg outbreaks, primarily in southern and eastern Africa.

A new case in Guinea was first identified last week. Only two months after the country was declared free from Ebola after a brief relapse that killed 12 people earlier this year.

Patients who died of the disease were first treated in a local clinic before their symptoms worsened rapidly, according to a WHO statement.

Analysts at the National Institute for Hemorrhagic Fever in Guinea and the Pasteur Institute in Senegal later confirmed the diagnosis of Marburg.

“The potential for widespread spread of the Marburg virus means that it needs to be stopped,” WHO’s director of Africa’s region, Matshidiso Moeti, said in a statement.

“We are working with health authorities to take immediate action based on Guinea’s past experience and expertise in managing Ebola transmitted in a similar manner,” said Moetti.

Both the Marburg case and this year’s Ebola case were detected in the Gueckedou district of Guinea near the border between Liberia and Côte d’Ivoire. The first case of Ebola, the largest in history from 2014 to 2016, was also from the same area of the forest area of southeastern Guinea.

According to WHO, the case fatality rate of Marburg fever varies from 24% to 88% in past outbreaks, depending on the virus strain and case management, adding that contact with infected body fluids and tissues causes infection. Symptoms include headache, hematemesis, muscle aches, and bleeding from various openings.
