Outbreak was declared at a retirement home in London after two COVID-19 cases were linked
The outbreak of COVID-19 was declared by the Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) at a retirement home in London late Friday night after two residents were tested positive for the virus.
According to MLHU, both cases at Grandwood Park’s retirement home were fully vaccinated people. One resident is hospitalized and the other is asymptomatic.
“This is expected over time as we see more and more vaccinated populations pass through the Delta strain,” said Dr. Alex Summers, a medical officer of health. The delta variant is also known as the first B1617 variant detected in India.
“Fortunately, it seems likely that the outbreak will be limited to only two cases.”
Summers said there was evidence of infection between the two cases, which caused the health unit to declare the outbreak.
MLHU does not update the COVID-19 dashboard over the weekend. As of Friday, the health unit reported 17 new cases in the area with no additional deaths.
In a statement on Friday, a spokesman for the house-owning Levela said he was working with MLHU to implement pandemic outbreak protocols and infection control practices.
Residents on the affected floors are quarantined in their rooms and monitored twice daily for symptoms, the statement said.
“All staff are screened at the beginning and end of the shift and the residence should always wear a surgical mask and eye protection,” he added.
All vaccinated residents have been vaccinated a second time and most are fully vaccinated. Almost all staff are fully vaccinated, according to a Revera spokeswoman.
