Indianapolis (Wish) – The increased prevalence of children with what is called respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) has puzzled pediatricians.
The virus usually appears in the months of winter, but is now exploding. Moreover, cases of coronavirus in children are the highest ever since the pandemic began.
Health professionals are concerned about the threat of double virus, especially because the symptoms of RSV are similar to those of COVID-19. News 8 spoke with Dr. Kirsten Kloepfer, an immunologist at Riley Children’s Health. He explained what parents need to know if their child has these symptoms.
“The symptoms are very similar,” Kloepfer said. “Runny nose, cough, stuffy nose. For now, I don’t know the difference. It’s a good idea to have a COVID test so you can rule out RSV or coronavirus.”
Kloepfer says parents should not wait for their children to be tested if these symptoms persist for more than two days, especially if COVID-19 is present.
She has never personally seen a patient with a superinfection, but she says it is possible. Kloepfer says that layering the virus requires more aggressive treatment and can lead to hospitalization, so be sure to monitor your child carefully.
