RSV cases are on the rise and Rocky Mountain Hospital for children is preparing for a potential surge in COVID patients – CBS Denver
Denver (CBS4) – Colorado health experts say the number of children with COVID is increasing. This is in line with the wave of new pediatric cases reported across the United States due to delta variants.
Dr. Reginald Washington, Chief Medical Officer at Rocky Mountain Children’s Hospital, said:
Their numbers have only increased slightly, but they are preparing for a surge in incidents.
“We can’t predict everything we have to predict COVID. We know when there will be a surge that isn’t the time to start planning,” he said.
As for staff and bed availability, capacity has already increased.
Preparation helps increase what COVID patients see. Currently, there is a need to support the current surge of the second respiratory virus, also known as RSV.
“I think RSV kids are now two to three times as many as they were a week ago,” Washington said.
RSV is seen annually in Colorado, but is usually not seen until autumn.
Doctors believe that the initial surge has much to do with our anti-pandemic measures.
“I think there was almost no RSV because the kids weren’t out last year. They wore masks and so on. Now they’re more exposed to each other,” Washington said.
They believe that preparation is the key to avoiding problems, despite the proliferation of both viruses at the same time. He says the real concern is for his parents.
“Difficulty has the same symptoms, so parents will have a hard time saying,” Is this RSV? ” Or “Is this a COVID?” And I would discourage my parents from trying to make a diagnosis, “he said.
Symptoms of RSV include dyspnea, vomiting, and diarrhea. This is very similar to what Dr. Washington says parents should see a doctor sooner or later.
