Hospitals are seeing an increase in RSV cases affecting infants :: WRAL.com
When thousands of children return to school on Monday, the virus raises concerns among triangle health professionals. This is not COVID-19. Cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are increasing.
The virus is common in adults but can be dangerous to young children. According to doctors, RSV usually occurs in November, but this year it occurred earlier.
Dr. Lori Langdon, a pediatrician at Harnet Health, said the virus could cause “severe dyspnea in newborns.”
WakeMed, UNC Health and Duke Health are all seeing an increase in RSV patients.
Dr. Lisa Pickett, a critical care surgeon at Duke University Hospital, said:
Authorities say four children have been hospitalized for RSV and four more are in the intensive care unit. Usually, one case can occur in a hospital during this time.
“ER is busy with cases of RSV,” Langdon said.
She said hand washing is important and people should avoid kissing babies to protect them.
Langdon tells his parents not to panic if his child is diagnosed with RSV.
“Most babies can manage it well. In older teenage children and adults, it’s a cold with a stuffy nose and a common cough,” she said.
Doctors say if your child is experiencing dyspnea, don’t wait, take them to the emergency room.
