Hoxworth Cincinnati COVID-19 convalescent plasma treatment saves lives
Ted Richardson set foot in Christ Hospital in Mount Auburn. His health has deteriorated rapidly since COVID-19, and the same day a clinical trial of a new coronavirus treatment was conducted.
Seven days later, the Evanston resident was discharged, released from COVID-19 and returned home.
“I love it,” he said a week later. He is luckier than his sisters who had the same lung infection but did not survive.
Richardson, 50, was the first patient infused by doctors at Christ Hospital with convalescent plasma collected from survivors of COVID-19.
Therefore, he was the first to receive this type of treatment in the country. 17 different protocol research exams It is underway in the United States and 61 countries around the world.

The study is a COVID-19 convalescent plasma study and involves collecting plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients. A patient’s blood contains antibodies that prevent it from reinfecting a virus that leads to lung disease.
Their plasma is given to most sick COVID-19 patients in the hope of preventing progression and improving the disease-causing virus. Plasma is the liquid that makes up The largest part of human blood, About 55% of the content.
In the process of collecting plasma, a person’s blood is collected and mechanically spun to separate plasma from cells and return red and white blood cells and platelets to a donor. The first donation was made on April 24th at the Christ Hospital / University of Cincinnati Hoxworth Blood Center trial.
Richardson suffered a fever lasting for several days after taking care of his sisters descending at COVID-19. First, he did a self-quarantine, but entered the emergency room that day in April.
He was tested for COVID-19, tested positive, was taken to the quarantine room, and was managed by Christ Hospital Infectious Diseases Expert Dr. John Cafardi.
“It was very scary,” Richardson said. Although he was taking care of his sister, she had some health conditions and was at high risk for COVID-19. I had no coughs or shortness of breath at first.
He was surprised to get the virus. “I didn’t feel anything”
“They put me two liters of oxygen in a mask,” Richardson said. It quickly swelled to five or six, he said. Richardson found that the wind was so strong that he had a hard time speaking in full sentences.

Kafaldi said Richardson’s temperature was around 104 degrees Celsius and wouldn’t fail. His oxygen needs continued to increase, and despite his greatest supportive care, his position was diluted.
He said he had to do something else.
Instead of intubating Richardson, Cafardi told patients about an FDA-approved trial initiated by Christ Hospital and the Hoxworth Blood Center. This has led to plasma treatments that have not yet been approved by the government.
“I didn’t hesitate to try it. They are scientists. I trust them,” Richardson said, if the government approved convalescent plasma therapies. I laughed that I might not be so confident.
His turnaround came quickly. Four days after being treated with convalescent plasma, hospital officials said they had COVID-19 removed and were ready to go home.
It was May 1st.
Treatments available elsewhere in the area
Richardson’s case marks the first successful treatment of a convalescent plasma protocol trial led by cardiologist Dr. Dean K. Kerey Akes of Christ Hospital and Dr. David O., Chief Medical Officer of the Hoxworth Blood Center.
In the week of May 4, three other critical Christ Hospital patients with COVID-19 were better treated, Mr. Keleykeks said.
According to Kereiakes, his protocol is currently being used by teams at other major hospitals in the region.
His idea of ventures in the Cincinnati region began when Kereiakes oversaw the onset of a new coronavirus pandemic.
He says he felt compelled to act because he had no cure for the life-threatening, fast-moving illness.
“There’s nothing worse than feeling helpless and hopeless when you see someone getting worse in front of you,” said Kerey Akes. “We needed to make something readily available. At least one weapon was needed to make a difference in patient care.”
From idea to bedside
COVID-19 Shows how the concept of convalescent plasma was developed.
Blood centers nationwide have started Increased plasma collection Early April.
On April 3 The FDA has approved some emergency COVID-19 plasma studies. It was shown in one study in China that plasma reduced viral load in 5 patients.
On April 9, Ohio Governor Jon Husted announced federal approval of the Kereiakes and Oh plasma protocols during Governor Mike Dewein’s daily briefing on the new coronavirus pandemic.
Once Kereiakes and Oh were approved, they assembled 250 potential blood donors who were eligible for their study.
Treating people with antibody-enriched plasma is new to COVID-19, but it’s been around a century of practice. Patients with the 1918-1919 influenza pandemic, the H1N1 influenza pandemic, and the Ebola virus epidemic received plasma from patients who recovered as treatment.
By early May, more than 70 units of patients recovering from COVID-19 had been distributed to regional hospitals, including all major hospitals in Cincinnati / Northern Kentucky, Ohio said.
The American Blood Center (ABC) and the Blood Center of America have shipped more than 6,000 units of COVID-19 convalescent plasma in March and April, including more than 5,000 extended access protocol hospitals. ABC. That number was expected to increase significantly in May.
“So far, clinicians seem to be happy with this,” Oh said. Most doctors use 1 or 2 units per COVID-19 patient, he said.
Richardson said he received two.
His sister, Ethel Richardson, died at COVID-19, he said. “That’s a sad part.” She was 62 and was immunocompromised as a dialysis patient, “Richardson said.
He said Ethel’s death was in the light of how lucky he was that he had the opportunity to be treated through a blood plasma study at the Christ Hospital / Hoxworth Blood Center.
He has two adult children, the Raven (22), and Richardson lives with his fiancée Kelly Marott and her daughter Adriana. Cherry Grove Ted Junior. His children lost their mother a few years ago.
“I didn’t mean to keep them alone,” Richardson said. I saw my family.
“I am a survivor of COVID-19.”
