Research shows that intestines, kidneys, and other organs can be infected with Covid-19

Two separate reports suggest that the virus can attack various organs far beyond the lungs-may help explain the various symptoms caused by Covid-19 infection. Findings

They also discovered a virus capable of infecting cells in stool collected from patients with Covid-19.

“A 68-year-old female patient developed fever, sore throat, and cough productivity and diarrhea after admission to Princess Margaret Hospital,” Zhou and colleagues write. “I isolated the infectious virus from her stool specimen,” they added.

Separately, a team from the Medical Center of the University of Hamburg Eppendorf in Germany autopsied 27 patients who died of Covid-19. They have found viruses in various organs.

“SARS-CoV-2 can be detected in multiple organs, including the lungs, pharynx, heart, liver, brain, and kidneys,” they said. New England Medical Journal.

The virus appears to work particularly well in the kidney, they wrote-something that may explain the high rates of kidney damage seen among Covid-19 patients.
