Iowa Poison Control Warns About the Dangers of Ivermectin

Cedar Rapids, Iowa (KCRG)-Ivermectin, a drug used to treat heartworm in livestock and certain skin conditions in humans, is sought to treat COVID-19.
Physicians were investigating the possibility of treating COVID-19 with ivermectin, but clinical trials did not find sufficient evidence to approve it as a treatment.
The Food and Drug Administration explains that ivermectin is not an antiviral drug specifically used to treat viruses like COVID-19.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that the number of prescriptions written for ivermectin has increased significantly. Earlier this year, less than 4,000 prescriptions were written weekly for ivermectin. This number is currently up to 88,000.
“We want people to know that we never use animal medications ourselves, because veterinary formulations are often intended for use in large animals. It can be highly concentrated, so if it is ingested by humans, this can easily lead to overdose, “says Tammy Noble of Iowa Poison Control.
In some states, there is an increase in calls related to ivermectin overdose.
Noble says Iowa hasn’t seen an increase in phones, but believes this may be due to the state’s agricultural background.
“Looking at the numbers in August, August looks like our typical numbers,” Noble said.
Some of the potential signs of overdose are nausea and vomiting, which can lead to dehydration.
