In Cayuga County, more COVID-19 cases have already occurred in September than in the same month last year.

The Cayuga County Health Department confirmed 25 new cases on Thursday. In the first two days of September, the county reported 63 new cases. This is more than 42 cases in September 2020.

This tally highlights the current status of COVID-19 in Cayuga County. Last year, in September, there were an average of just over one new case per day. The surge in cases, hospitalizations and deaths was due to the tranquility before the harsh winter.

But this month is very different. The 63 new cases in September follow the 747 in August, the third worst month in the pandemic county. Hospitalization increased and 6 people died. It was the first virus-related death in five months and the highest since January.

The new case isolated on Thursday included 17 unvaccinated residents, eight of whom were vaccinated. This is consistent with the trends observed since the Ministry of Health began sharing vaccination status in the latest status information on August 23.

In 11 days, 391 new cases occurred. 253 have not been vaccinated and 138 have been vaccinated.
