The second wave of the infamous Spanish flu was even more deadly than the first wave-experts warned that the same could happen in a coronavirus pandemic.

It first appeared in a military base in Kansas in March 1918, by the end of the month 38 soldiers had died and 1,100 were hospitalized.

The ongoing war meant that soldiers were being transported around the world-helping the virus spread in the years before traveling by air.

Three more waves killed between 500 and 100 million people and infected about one-third of the world’s population.

A second wave of coronaviruses could occur, and despite the country’s still growing numbers, it is beginning to break free.

James Harris, an infectious disease and World War I historian, said: “The rapid movement of soldiers around the world was the main epidemic of this disease.

“The entire military-industrial complex, with many men and supplies moving in a crowded state, was certainly a major factor in the breadth of the pandemic.”

After the first outbreak began to go extinct in August of that year, it quickly returned and was further killed in the second wave.

It was between September and November of the year that the Spanish flu took the most lives.

With 195,000 deaths in the United States alone in October 1918, doctors wondered how quickly young and healthy people died.

“There were columns of corpses, absolutely hundreds of them, and they were dead by something completely different,” said Captain Jeffrey Keynes of the Royal Army Medical Corps.

“It was a terrifying sight to see them lying there and I being dead for something untreated.”

The author and historian Kenneth C. Davis said Socialist worker “Their deaths were horrible. They were coughing, aching and suffering from high fever. Some of them were bleeding from the eyes, nose, mouth and ears.”

There was a “W curve” in mortality. This is due to high levels of mortality in the very younger generation and the very elderly, and a sharp increase in healthy 25-35 years.

One of the reasons why the Spanish flu was particularly deadly was that some governments did not want to impose quarantine during the war, even though public health officials understood the risks of spreading the infection.

Harris argued that the British government believed that “the risk of spreading infection was the constant need for war justified.”

And in the absence of the vaccine, a third wave occurred in January 1919 in Australia. Once again, waves hit the entire United States and Europe.

But without the mass movement of troops, the infectious disease could not spread so quickly.

Davis claims that some sort of social distance departure helped to “flatten the curve” more than a century ago, saying it was an important lesson from history.

“It’s a very important lesson to understand that releasing these measures too early can be very expensive. That was certainly in 1918.”
