Border regions call for a regional approach to COVID-19 regulation
With constant changes to COVID-19 regulations throughout Moncton, NB-Primorskaya, local authorities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick want the state government to apply the same regulations.
David Kogon, Mayor of Amherst, NS, believes that Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have the same borders and COVID-19 restrictions, which is beneficial to their community.
“The difference in approach from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia can be confusing for our local groups on either side of the border,” said Corgon.
“I think one of the two states’ common approaches will help us here. It’s just a request for consideration from the government.”
Both states are currently working on the fourth wave, but each has a different approach to how to handle border restrictions.
Anthony Maddalena, owner of the Bagtown Brewing Company in Sackville, New Brunswick, says she had a lot of experience while crossing the border.
“I’m originally from Halifax, so I went there to pick up supplies and meet my family,” Maddalena said. “I had to fill out a form to get there, or I had to pull it up and ask a completely different question, there are different levels of seriousness behind it.”
He found that people entering New Brunswick this summer had no border restrictions, but his business improved.
On Monday, Nova Scotia will enter Phase 5 of the reopening. That is, the restrictions are lifted, but other methods, including forced masking in public places indoors, are retained. The physical distance and collection restrictions for events hosted by an authorized company or organization will be lifted.
Nova Scotia will join New Brunswick next week to implement full vaccination certification for non-essential events and businesses.
New Brunswick is in an emergency due to the high number of COVID-19 cases, but the state requires anyone who wants to cross the border to register first.
Sackville Mayor Sean Meshaw said the change in border restrictions has confused some people.
“Since there are people in both communities who travel between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia every day, it’s easier for people to get rid of a kind of cloud in that situation.”
Earlier this week, at a council of the Atlantic Prime Ministers’ Meeting, Prime Minister Brain Higgs spoke with neighboring officials on how states could work closely together in dealing with COVID-19.
“We will continue to consider ways to help travelers to the region work together, recognizing the unique challenges of each state in dealing with the virus,” Higgs said in a statement.
