Survivors are now strongly supportive of finding a cure for breast cancer
Fort Wayne, Indiana (WANE) – For one of the board members of the Vera Bradley Foundation, participating in the fight against breast cancer has become a personal battle.
Elizabeth Miller has been a board member of the Vera Bradley Foundation for four years. She serves with her mother-in-law, Pat Miller, one of Vera Bradley’s co-founders. Elizabeth, a mother, daughter, friend, and nurse, knew how important it was to prevent breast cancer and told her to make a mammogram appointment from the age of 35.
In April 2019, her mammogram returned vividly. She received a letter at home all year long informing her that her breast tissue was dense. She did a self-examination in October of the same year and found a lump. Doctors have discovered stage 1 breast cancer. “That’s not what I’ve ever expected to happen to me, I don’t think anyone will,” she shares.
Elizabeth decided to have a double mastectomy in November 2019.
“I have many surgical complications. Breast cancer, even if detected early, can actually upset your life,” explains Elizabeth. In 2020 she had five surgeries. “Especially it was very difficult to add the COVID on top of it, perform the surgery, drop it on the door and pick it up later. It definitely added an element to it, so I’m grateful for where I am now, And I have no cancer now and will have two years in October. “
Miller is grateful to the organization for continuing to fund research to find cures. “Everyone there has a personal relationship with breast cancer. It’s everywhere, everyone knows people with breast cancer, and it’s about research, and I’m directly benefiting. We all really believe that we all benefit from what the Foundation is doing by helping the IU with funding for research because we have friends and it’s all about research. Elizabeth is now a strong supporter of ensuring that women are starting to get mammograms early, raising awareness and raising money to find a cure for breast cancer to the Vera Bradley Foundation. I am grateful.
