UNLV Wastewater Testing Program Used to Track Coronavirus Expands to Influenza | COVID-19 (Coronavirus Infection)
Las Vegas (FOX5)-The technology that has been used to track COVID-19 in the community may soon be used for other illnesses as well.
For almost a year, UNLV researchers have been experimenting with wastewater tests, checking sewage for evidence of COVID-19 mutants.
In early September, they used that test to detect a Mu variant in the valley. Currently, they are expanding their programs to look for the flu virus.
Dr. Edwin O, who runs the program, said it was important to focus on the flu now, as the flu was almost gone during the pandemic.
He said it was because everyone had health measures such as wearing masks and keeping distance. As a result, they don’t have much data to deal with since last year’s flu season, and many doctors predict that the flu may recur as restrictions are relaxed.
