Silver lining for foster children, adopted pets, and their people during a coronavirus pandemic
Tuesday, May 19, 2020 (American Heart Association News) -New furry friends are filling the gap when it’s hard to get close to old friends. They may also help improve human health.
COVID-19 In-home orders have seen a surge in animal adoption and foster care, with shelters all over the United States reporting empty kennels. From March 15th to late April, there were approximately 600 online applications for the American Association for the Prevention of Animal Welfare New York City Foster Program. In Los Angeles, over 800 people have completed ASPCA’s online foster parent application.
Bershadker reports that one software company serving nearly 1,200 shelters increased nearly 800% in raised animals (compared to last year). On the other hand, shelters are innovating to meet the demands of adoption while maintaining social distance.
“Especially animals offer incredible comfort and companionship,” said Barshacker.
They may also offer much more.
Keeping pets, especially dogs, appears to be associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, a 2013 American Heart Association scientific statement concludes. Also, people with cardiovascular disease who have pets are more likely to live longer.
“The most obvious benefit of adopting pets, especially dogs, is that most people increase regular physical activity, which is known to promote cardiovascular health,” said Baylor College of Medicine. Statement by professor and scientist. “There is good research data that adopting dogs leads to increased daily walking, at least for most people.”
Dogs may improve their health in other ways.
“People may become more invested in caring for their health, and perhaps they will seek better medical care and adhere to their medications.”
Christine Breen and her husband, Russ, see some of these benefits.
The Coronavirus crisis caught a couple in Texas during a work-related relocation. When the home order was initiated, Breeze decided to look for a house in Dallas with a fenced yard rather than a new apartment in Austin. Their idea turned to Mike, a senior “chag” or a mix of chihuahuas and pugs they raised before they planned their move.
“When all this started, I was pretty much dumped. My husband looked at me,” Should I get the mic back? “And I said so, and that’s the best we did Was the decision. “
“He makes things more fun and happy and does something that distracts you from the world we live in,” she said. Unless the “perfect home” comes first, Brynes expects to adopt a microphone when their situation calms down.
Despite his age, 10-year-old Mike was energetic and urged the couple to do more exercise. “We walked him three times a day and went out to the neighborhood. It’s so beautiful that we need exercise,” Christine said. “We definitely lost a little both, and that has spurred us to make some healthier changes.”
Practical studies have shown that pet owners, especially dogs, are more likely to report that they adhere to diet and exercise recommendations than non-pet owners. Research also links:
– Reduce cats’ risk of cardiovascular disease in women, especially stroke.
– Possession of dogs for a higher survival rate among people hospitalized for heart attacks or strokes caused by blockage of blood vessels.
– Breeding dogs or cats to reduce the risk of high blood pressure.
Further research is needed to understand the interaction between pets and human health. One thing is not clear. “Do pets make people happy and healthy, or do happy and healthy people tend to adopt pets?”
The main reason to have a pet is to provide a loving home. If you want to improve your cardiovascular risk, you have to do more.
“Sitting a pet on a sofa all day and smoking potato chips and cigarettes is not the only way to improve your health and prevent heart disease.”
