West Nile virus kills residents of Will County, recording first death in 2021: IDPH | Chicago News

According to state health officials, Will County residents, who first became ill in late August, were the first to be known to have died of the West Nile virus in Illinois this year.
“It’s already fall, but a warm weekend is expected, and the West Nile virus remains at risk until the first heavy frost,” Dr. Goji Ejike, director of public health in Illinois, said in a statement. “It is important that everyone continues to take precautions, such as using insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved shirts and trousers, and staying indoors from dusk to dawn.”
People over the age of 50 and those with weakened immunity are at increased risk of developing serious illness due to the virus that is transmitted by mosquito bites. In rare cases, meningitis, encephalitis, and even death can occur, according to state health officials.
According to health officials, symptoms of the virus include fever, nausea, headaches, and muscle aches, which can last from days to weeks. However, according to IDPH, 4 out of 5 people infected with West Nile fever show no symptoms.
So far this year, 40 people have been infected with the virus in Illinois, according to IDPH. In 2020, 42 people were infected with the virus and 4 died, according to state health officials.
Health officials recommend following the three Rs to prevent West Nile virus: reduce, repel, and report. Reduce the number of mosquitoes by removing the external container that holds the water. Use insect repellent to repel mosquitoes. If you find an area where water has been stagnant for more than a week, such as a roadside ditch or a flooded yard, file a report with your local government or health department.
