More mold detected at Seattle Children’s Hospital
Seattle Children’s will reclose the operating room and reschedule the surgery. Hospitals are taking precautions after air tests reveal new concerns.

In 2019, 10 ORs were temporarily closed to install an indoor HEPA filtration system on the new rooftop air treatment units and their ORs. HEPA is a highly effective filtration system that removes over 99.97% of the particles from the air passing through the filter. Since resuming OR in February 2020, we have conducted continuous barometric pressure monitoring and daily air tests to ensure the new air handling unit and HEPA filter system are working as expected.
Providing safe and quality care is a Seattle Children’s top priority. As mentioned before, we promise to take prompt and necessary action, including the termination of the OR, in case of unexpected test results. Regular air tests conducted in May detected low levels of fungal spores in several operating rooms and equipment storage rooms. Daily tests have not detected spores of Aspergillus fumigatus, a species of Aspergillus associated with 14 previously identified Aspergillus surgical site infections. Air tests detected very low levels of Aspergillus versicolor spores, which are generally unrelated to causing surgical site infections. Nevertheless, the air test results prompted us to evaluate the environment and OR air pressure, revealing unexpected air pressure results.
Based on these results, we decided to work with an external engineering expert to proceed with a broader assessment of the affected space. It is expected that some OR’s will be closed for several weeks while the evaluation is in progress.
