A new study shows that the COVID-19 masking requirement also suppressed influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection during last year’s influenza season, according to a study summary of the American Pediatric Society.
This study aimed to investigate the effects of masking and social distance practices used to control the spread of COVID-19. Researchers in Ohio have found that these measures have reduced the spread of influenza by 99% and that there are no cases of RSV in the study area in northern Ohio.
“The numbers don’t lie. Face masking, proper hygiene and isolation can be an effective means of protecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and toddlers during the respiratory virus season.” Said the abstract author, Dr. Osamael Asar, MD, in a press release. “It could be a simple non-medicinal way to save lives.”
The survey was conducted at Aklon Childrens, Ohio, during the peak breathing season from October 2020 to April 2021. Studies have shown that forced social distance during the outbreak of COVID-19 has created a unique opportunity to investigate the impact of these provisions on the spread of influenza RSV during the predicted peak season.
