Promising treatments for autism are inadequate, studies find

It has long been expected that nasal drops of oxytocin, a hormone commonly used to induce labor, can be used to treat autism-related socialization difficulties. This theory has gained momentum over the last decade or so, with some small studies showing promising results.
But now, the researchers behind this kind of biggest study on this issue say that hormones are safe, but they don’t benefit.

“There was great hope that the drug would be effective,” said Dr. Linmary Sikic, Associate Consulting Professor, Principal Investigator and Lead Author of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University School of Medicine. A study published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine enrolled 290 children autistic children aged 3 to 17 years who received oxytocin or placebo daily for 24 weeks. The child’s social abilities were assessed before starting treatment, during the study period, and at the end of the study period.
Overall, researchers found that oxytocin was well tolerated and had few side effects, but there was no significant difference between children who received the hormone and those who did not.
“Thousands of children with autism spectrum disorders were prescribed intranasal oxytocin before being properly tested,” said Jeremy Fernstra Vanderwee of the New York State Institute of Psychiatry and Columbia University. Dr. Les said. “Thankfully, our data show that it’s safe. Unfortunately, it’s not better than a placebo when used daily for months.”
Veenstra-VanderWeele said the findings show that clinicians and their families need to expect “strong evidence of the safety and benefits of new treatments” before use.
