Harrisburg, PA-The number of new coronavirus cases in Pennsylvania has decreased by nearly a quarter in the last three weeks.
State health officials say 21,800 new infections have been reported in the last seven days. This is down from just over 25,000 new cases in the previous week and over 28,000 in the previous week.
This is the first time the state has seen a significant reduction in new cases before the delta variants of the virus began to surge in early summer.
Hospitalization has also decreased slightly over the past two weeks. Experts said it would take longer than usual for hospitalizations to decline after the number of cases began to decline.
The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 4,496 COVID-19-positive cases on Friday, bringing the total to 1,530,309 cases across the state.
2,929 people are hospitalized with COVID-19. Of that number, 668 patients are in the COVID-19 intensive care unit, according to a Friday news release from the State Department of Health.
The state-wide positive rate for the week of October 8-14 was 9.7%.
The state reported another 88 deaths on Friday, with a total of 30,903 deaths resulting from COVID-19.
So far, 5,654,885 people have been negative.
According to the state health department, licensed nursing homes and personal care homes have so far lived a total of 78,677 COVID-19s, employed 17,088 and totaled 95,765 at 1,642 facilities in all 67 counties. ..
Of the total deaths reported to PA-NEDSS, 14,291 have occurred in residents of long-term care or personal care facilities.The county breakdown is from the Health Department Website.
Approximately 32,175 cases of all cases occur among healthcare professionals.
As of Thursday, Pennsylvania ranks fifth among all 50 states in terms of total dose of vaccine administered, according to the CDC. As of Thursday, 71.1% of Pennsylvania over the age of 18 have been fully vaccinated, the CDC says.
