Further decrease in COVID-19 case rate and positive rate

Children and adolescents continue to bear the brunt of COVID-19 in Windsor-Essex, but important indicators suggest that the virus is beginning to lose grip in the region.
This week’s epidemiological summary shows a significant drop in case rates. The percentage of tests returned from the lab is declining, and the virus is not being replicated with the same force within the community.
According to the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit Weekly Report, 28 COVID-19s occurred for every 100,000 residents last week. This is a drop from 47.7 just 7 days ago.
Twenty-nine percent of all cases reported in the last two weeks were under 20 years of age. Cases between the ages of 20 and 29 account for 22%.
Fewer tests return to positive. Last week’s positive rate was 3.6%, down 0.4 percentage points from 4% last week.
Another important indicator, virus replication, dropped from 0.91 last week to 0.81. A replication rate of less than 1 indicates that the spread of COVID-19 is weakening.
Immunization rates in the region have also continued to rise, albeit slowly. The number of doses received last week decreased from 4,416 in the previous week to 4,007.
The summary showed that vaccination rates remained low in the young cohort. Only 66.4% of 18-24 people are fully vaccinated and only 68.5% of 12-17 people are fully vaccinated.
Over 81% of all vaccinated residents receive two doses.
On Thursday, the health unit reported 17 new infections. Six people have been acquired in the community. The same numbers result from close contact and five remain under investigation.
Currently, Windsor-Essex has 173 active cases, of which 109 contain variants of concern.
There are 3,018 active cases across Ontario. The state reported Thursday that three more people were killed and 409 were newly infected.
