Experts told USA Today that large consumption of these insects poses a threat to pet health. But that rarely happens.

“The simple answer is yes. Lady beetles can harm pets.” Jon ZawislakAn entomologist at the University of Arkansas School of Systems Agriculture said in an email. “But it’s quite rare and very treatable, and the actual reports on this are almost anecdotal.”

Insects pose a risk to pets, but only in large numbers
Lady beetle was introduced in the United States to control pests that threaten agriculture. However, Zawislak said their population tends to be very large because they lack important predators.
“These beetles are reported to secrete dirty liquids and taste bad when they feel threatened, so there are few predators,” he said.
Nancy HinkleA veterinary entomologist at the University of Georgia said mammals should not consume the liquid.
“These liquids can cause tissue irritation and the potential for short-term tissue damage when exposed to large amounts for extended periods of time,” she said in an email. “Veterinarians and pet owners need to be aware of this, but it’s a rare phenomenon.”
According to Zawislak, pets may occasionally try to eat lady beetles, but they rarely eat much because of their bad taste. When consumed, it is unlikely to cause severe poisoning.
“In order for a dog to be truly toxic, it would have to consume a great many unpleasant beetles,” said Zawislac. “Animals trying to eat something can stick to the mucous ridges of the palate, and prolonged contact with malicious protective chemicals can irritate the palate. ”

“If your pet comes in contact with a lady beetle and is suspected of ingesting a large amount, veterinary treatment is recommended.” Curly Fox, A staff doctor at the New York City Animal Medical Center said in an email. “Treatment usually consists of manual removal of the beetle and supportive care. The prognosis after treatment is generally good.”

A Facebook post also warns about the threat to humans of the lady beetle, but it is exaggerated.
Zawislak said the beetle can cause a slight pinch and small discomfort, and possibly small swollen red spots that last for a day or two.
“They don’t sting, and their bite is unlikely to break the skin,” he said. “They do not spread known diseases to humans.”
