Louisville, Kentucky (WAVE)-The CDC issued a warning about the global outbreak of measles after 22 million babies missed the vaccine during a pandemic.
According to the CDC, measles kills more than 60,000 people worldwide, primarily infants.
“Confusion from something like a COVID pandemic can be really dangerous in a short period of time,” said Dr. Adam Ratner, a pediatric infectious disease specialist.
Known as one of the most contagious viruses, measles was declared eradicated in the United States by 2000, mainly due to vaccines.
However, travelers can bring the virus to the United States and spread it to unvaccinated people.
The number of reported measles cases decreased in 2020, but the CDC said about 1,300 cases were reported in 2019. The risk of outbreaks is increasing worldwide due to missed vaccinations.
“It is estimated that the measles vaccine alone has saved about 32 million lives in the last two decades, but that is not a guarantee,” said Ratner.
In the United States, children receive the measles vaccine twice. The first dose is about 1 year old and the second dose is between 4 and 6 years old.
Symptoms appear 1-2 weeks after contact with the virus and include high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery eyes. The rash appears 3-5 days after the first symptoms.
US health officials have said the measles vaccine is the key to keeping everyone safe.
