How a low vision test picks up early signs of a vision-threatening condition
Diabetes is becoming an increasingly worrisome health problem in New Zealand, with more than 250,000 kiwis living in this condition and expected to grow by as much as 90% over the next 20 years.
World Diabetes Day is November 15th, so don’t forget to book for a vision test. If you have diabetes, you are at risk of injury from a condition called diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to blindness if left untreated.
Complications are caused by damage to the blood vessels behind the eyes of the retina, with one in three diabetic kiwis showing signs of diabetic retinopathy.
According to Diabetes NZ, an estimated one in four New Zealanders lives with undiagnosed prediabetes symptoms.
