Monkeypox belongs to the same viral family as smallpox, but generally causes mild infections, a news release from the State Department said.
Direct contact with skin lesions, body fluids, or contaminants such as clothing and linen can spread among people. Another way it can spread is through large respiratory droplets. This means that health officials cannot travel more than a few feet and require lengthy face-to-face contact.
The case was confirmed by a resident of Maryland who recently returned from Nigeria. The person has mild symptoms, is isolated, and is not hospitalized. Public health authorities are following up on people who may have been exposed. They are monitored for symptoms for 21 days after exposure.
“Our response in close collaboration with (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) officials demonstrates the importance of maintaining a strong public health infrastructure,” said Jin Lean Chan, Deputy Secretary of Health, Maryland. The doctor said.
The disease usually begins with flu-like symptoms and swollen lymph nodes. After that, a widespread rash may appear on the face and body. The infection lasts 2-4 weeks.
Human monkeypox infections are rarely recorded outside Africa. They occur primarily in Central and West African countries. The Maryland Department of Health said that all strains of monkeypox virus can cause infections, but those in West Africa, where Nigeria is located, generally cause less serious illnesses.
