Gaisinger Lung Cancer Screening Program Promotes Early Detection
Danville, Pennsylvania – Gaisinger’s lung cancer screening program, launched last year, is the best way for risky patients to undergo annual screening, which is key to early detection of lung cancer.
If detected early, lung cancer is easy to treat and screening is an important diagnostic tool in the process. Cancer screenings such as mammograms and colonoscopy are familiar to many patients, but few know that they may be eligible for an annual lung cancer screening.
Lung cancer is the most cancer-related cause of death in men and women in the United States, and lung cancer screening is a non-invasive diagnostic test that helps detect early stages of cancer.
During the screening, a dedicated scanner is used to take detailed computerized lung pictures. This low-dose CT scan is painless and uses 75% less radiation than traditional CT scans. Screening takes only a few minutes and normal activity can be resumed immediately after the scan.

Patients are eligible for annual lung cancer screening if they are asymptomatic for lung cancer and meet all of the following criteria:
• Between 55 and 77 years old
• 30 packs of smoking history (1 pack per day for 30 years, 2 packs per day for 15 years, etc.).
• Currently smoking or quitting smoking within the last 15 years
After scanning, the results are analyzed by a comprehensive screening program and shared with both patients and physicians. Your doctor will help you if you need more tests.
