COVID-19: NB reports 99 new cases when the first child aged 5-11 years was vaccinated

New Brunswick has reported 99 new cases of COVID-19 and announced that the first children aged 5 to 11 years were vaccinated with the pediatric COVID-19 vaccine on Friday.

Since Tuesday, more than 9,300 appointments have been booked for children aged 5 to 11 years, the state said in a statement.

The NB government said new clinics for children have been added to Zone 1 (Moncton area) and Zone 3 (Fredericton area) to meet demand.

More than 130 pharmacies also participate in the provision of vaccines. They will begin receiving shipments between December 2nd and December 8th.

For new cases, the state’s public health department said the total number of active cases is currently 787, which includes 55 recovery.

There are 18 in the intensive care unit and 38 inpatients, for a total of 56 inpatients.

“The high number of cases is always a concern, but once investigated, we find that the majority of new cases are the result of contact with previously known cases,” said the state’s top doctor. Dr. Jenider Russell said in his presentation.

So far, 87.8 percent of eligible New Brunswickers have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and 93.5 percent have been initially vaccinated.

Cases confirmed at schools and childcare facilities

The state has announced that the incident has been confirmed at the Boys & Girls Club of St. John After School in Zone 2 (St. John area).

One or more new cases have also been identified at the following previously affected facilities:

• Origins Natural Learning Center in Zone 2 (Saint John Region)
• Spring Lou Tour Lee Learning and Child Care Center in Zone 3 (Fredericton Region)
• Both Northend Learning Center and Casuserie Amicale Inc. are located in Zone 1 (Moncton region).

Since September 7, cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in 90 early learning and childcare facilities.
