Coronavirus: Yukon relaxes restrictions on December 4th
Whitehorse-The Yukon Territory government has lifted some health restrictions this weekend as the COVID-19 epidemic has slowed in the region.
Prime Minister Sandy Silver said Wednesday that vaccination proofs will no longer be required to access personal services such as faith-based rallies, sports under the age of 18, or haircuts after December 4.
Companies can still decide to require proof of vaccination, according to Silver.
Indoor organized gatherings are no longer limited to 25 people, but are limited to 50% of the specified capacity.
There are 61 active cases in the region, for a total of 1,519, and there are 5 new cases.
The prime minister said he could not speculate when the territory would lift the state of emergency imposed last month during the proliferation of COVID-19 infections.
Dr. Catherine Elliot, acting as a medical officer, said authorities are keeping an eye on other states and territories when addressing Omicron’s concerns.
“It looks more contagious,” she said of the new variant. “Watch how it competes with the Delta variant and whether it becomes the dominant variant.”
The community has also begun registration to allow children to be vaccinated with COVID-19, and Elliott has repeatedly stated that the vaccine is safe.
“We know that children have experienced the incidental harm of a pandemic,” she said, citing quarantine and reduced access to friends and schools. “Vaccination of children over the age of 5 allows them to safely attend school and participate in sports, playgrounds and other activities.”
According to Elliott, vaccination appointments for children are fully booked by December 17th.
Dr. Catherine Smart, chairman of the Canadian Medical Association and Whitehorse pediatrician, said at a news conference that vaccination would make children’s lives easier.
