Three to four weeks ago, there were only about six COVID patients in the hospital, Davis said.
At that time, only an estimated 10% of the so-called “breakthrough” cases were vaccinated but still infected with the virus. Recently, he has evidence that the number of breakthrough cases has begun to increase.
The hospital hasn’t tested for a particular coronavirus strain, but the state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are testing for mutants, Davis said.
“I have never heard from anyone at that level that we have it in the county here,” Davis said.
Witham has not changed the mask policy. All visitors, staff, and employees are required to wear a mask inside, regardless of vaccination status. As an infection control expert, Davis said he was often asked if this was his life.
“Maybe if I asked me at the beginning of COVID, I would say,’Let’s get over this. The day will come when we can get back to normal,” he said. .. “But I don’t know what normal looks like anymore.”
Davis warns people to notice that in addition to the flu and COVID-19, there are some other viruses he is currently looking at.
“If you’re sick, make sure you’re at home,” he said. “Wash your hands and wear a mask if necessary.”
He has not yet seen cases in which a person has been infected with both influenza and COVID-19.
Influenza vaccination is available at the Boone County Health Department, various pharmacies, or general practitioners.
