Over 50,000 new Covid cases have occurred in 24 hours, but deaths have declined slightly
He set a new record of 51,459 in the UK COVID Cases of the last 24 hours, according to official figures released on Monday.
This is an increase of 9% the day before, bringing the total of 330,918 positive cases over the 7 days.
This is the highest number of cases recorded per day on Monday and is usually lower after weekends. This is after October 18, when there were 56,712 positive tests.
Numbers from the official daily summary show that there have been 41 deaths in the last 24 hours. This is a slight decrease of 0.2%, resulting in 7 days. Number of deaths 836 people died within 28 days of the positive test.
Another figure released by the National Bureau of Statistics shows that Covid-19 currently has 170,000 registered deaths in the UK, which is listed on the death certificate.
Government figures also show that by December, a total of 51,118,266 initial doses of the Covid-19 vaccine had been given in the United Kingdom. This is a rise of 21,955 the day before.
A second dose of approximately 46,557,413 doses was given, an increase of 27,166 doses.
A total of 20,580,644 boosts and a third dose were also given, increasing daily by 290,165.
Separate totals for boosters and third doses are not available.
A scholar at the University of East Anglia told the BBC Breakfast:
“But the early signs will probably spread very rapidly, perhaps begin to beat the Delta, and become a major variant at least within the next few weeks or months.”
