A huge loss of covid signs to watch out for

Researchers Christina Menni investigated the symptoms reported by users of mobile apps in the US and UK. 2.6 million users reported having symptoms, but only about 824,000 identified a particular one. Of these, 18,401 were tested for covid-19 and 7,178 were positive. Researchers found that about 65% of those who became positive reported odor and taste loss, but only about 20% of those who were negative.
Researchers used it to suggest that odor and taste loss could be used to identify potentially mild cases rather than relying solely on flu-like symptoms. Effects on olfactory receptors have also been observed with other respiratory viruses and earlier coronaviruses.
The authors noted that it is important to consider a combination of symptoms such as fatigue, cough, loss of appetite as well as loss of odor. Using these combinations reported in the app’s positive case, we predicted that 17.4% of people who had identified symptoms but were not tested could also become infected. This means that 5.4% of app responders are likely to be infected, compared to only 0.3% actually tested positive.
The model is limited because it is based on self-reported symptoms and may over-predict infectious diseases, but it provides new insights into the various symptoms of new diseases. Currently, most countries rely on established flu symptoms for testing and isolation. The limited definition means not detecting mild and asymptomatic cases. Looking for odor loss also helps detect more cases.
