COVID-19 infection remains high towards vacation in Michigan
(WXYZ) — Michigan is still considered a COVID-19 hotspot weeks after the fight against what doctors call the fourth surge.
At Christmas, more cases are expected as our state fights two coronavirus variants instead of one.
Delta is still the dominant variant. The CDC said it accounts for 99% of cases and the majority of hospitalizations.
The Omicron variant is new in Michigan, but experts say it is more infectious than Delta.
“In Michigan, almost everything is going in the wrong direction locally,” said Susan Ringler Serniglia of the Washtenaw County Health Department.
The photo of COVID-19 in Michigan is harsh. Eighty-three counties have reported “high” COVID-19 infection levels, and the state is tracking 50 new or ongoing outbreaks.
The Delonis Homeless Shelter in Washtenaw County has been trying to curb outbreaks at the facility for two weeks. So far, they are still in operation.
“This is not unique. It is a reflection of the very high levels of infection and activity occurring throughout the community from an outbreak perspective,” said Ringler-Cerniglia.
Since the beginning of the pandemic on Friday, the state has hit an unfortunate milestone, killing 25,000 people.
Authorities are now facing new challenges after identifying the first case of the Omicron variant in Michigan. This spreads more easily, but it can be less serious.
“It seems that some of the immune defenses, such as monoclonal antibodies, convalescent plasma, and vaccine-induced antibodies, can be circumvented,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci.
However, getting a booster gives you a sufficiently high level of protection that works well against Omicron.
Mitigation measures are essential, especially in places like Washtenaw County where hospitals are approaching capacity.
According to experts, washing hands, avoiding large crows, wearing masks indoors, vaccination, and boosting can be very helpful for now.
