The number of COVID-19 cases is increasing across Pioneer Valley and Massachusetts, as the entire state is once again experiencing “high” levels of community infection, according to the latest data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A month ago, both Hampshire and Franklin counties had “substantial” community infections that were one level lower than “high.” The CDC recommends that everyone wear a mask in an indoor public place throughout Massachusetts.
The Department of State’s December 8 report showed 5,402 new cases of COVID-19 across the state from the previous week.
The CDC reported 550 new cases in Hampshire County since December 2, an increase of 78% from the previous week, with less than 10 deaths. Over 74% of eligible individuals have been vaccinated at least once and 62.3% have been fully vaccinated.
In Franklin County, there have been 304 new cases since December 2, an increase of 36% over the previous week and fewer than 10 deaths. Over 76% of eligible individuals have been vaccinated at least once and 63% have been fully vaccinated.
From November 21st to December 4th, there were 351 new coronavirus outbreaks in Holyoke, 147 in Greenfield, 108 in Northampton, and 99 in East Hampton, according to DPH data. There were 70 cases in Montague and 67 cases in Northampton.
On Friday, the Amherst Health Department reported 154 active cases.
According to the latest CDC weekly data, tests decreased by 25% in Hampshire County and 21% in Franklin County from the previous week.
Children aged 5 to 17 years can be vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, and children over the age of 18 can be vaccinated with any vaccine. DPH recommends vaccine booster shots for anyone over the age of 16 living, working or studying in Massachusetts, with 1.44 million boosters to date. ..
Since the beginning of the pandemic, 16,876 people in Massachusetts have died of COVID-19. Across the state, DPH reported 1,204 active hospitalizations on 8 December, with 252 patients in the intensive care unit and 144 patients on mechanical ventilation.
