Deer in northeastern Ohio catching COVID-19, according to research
Cleveland, Ohio — A study testing hundreds of deer shows that white-tailed deer in northeastern Ohio are infected with COVID-19.
According to the news release from Ohio State University, From January to March, researchers tested 360 deer in nine locations throughout the region. Deer were positive in 6 locations and 129 (35.8%) were infected with the virus.
“A practical theory based on our sequence is that humans give it to deer, and obviously we gave it to them several times,” said an associate professor of veterinary preventive medicine. Andrew Bowman, the lead author of the study, said. “There is evidence that six different viruses have been introduced into these deer populations. It does not mean that a single population once got it and it spread.”
Three different variants were found, but the delta variant is not one of them. Studies have found that deer living near more humans are infected more often.
Studies show that deer may have been infected by drinking contaminated water.
The concern, according to Bowman, is that deer can carry the virus and cause it to infect humans in the future.
“Based on evidence from other studies, we knew that they were exposed to the wild and could infect them in the laboratory and the virus could be transmitted from deer to deer.
