Children’s Wisconsin says it has identified the first suspected cases of Multi-System Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) in Wisconsin. MIS-C has been seen in some kids who have been infected by or exposed to COVID-19 and can present with many different symptoms, including a persistent high fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, swelling of the hands and feet, and red eyes and tongue. Children’s says that most kids diagnosed with MIS-C have recovered with brief hospital stays (in some cases no hospitalization was required).Children’s Wisconsin told WISN 12 News in a news release that when MIS-C was first identified globally and in the United States in late April and early May, it created a multidisciplinary team to help identify and treat kids with suspected MIS-C. WISN 12 News spoke recently with a doctor at Children’s who said cases of this illness are tied to coronavirus.”These children who are presenting with this inflammatory condition many of them are testing positive for current COVID infection or a prior infection they’ve recovered from,” pediatric cardiologist Dr. Salil Ginde said. “Because it’s so rare, we’re trying to better characterize what this condition is from. What we know is it’s inflammatory, that it affects a lot of different parts of the body including the heart and the blood vessels.”Five of the children have recovered, but two remain hospitalized there.Children’s said the cases have been reported to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
