Up to 80% of COVID-19 infections are asymptomatic, a new case report says

(WXYZ) —A recently released study has shown that up to 80% of COVID-19 infections are asymptomatic. Scientists who researched passengers on a cruise ship found that 8 out of 10 did not show COVID-19 symptoms, despite positive test results.

People know that they can be asymptomatic. The information is not new. What is surprising in this study, however, is the number of people who are infected with the virus and who do not even know it has.

Well, this particular cruise was a 21-day expedition. It started in Argentina and the plan was to sail to Antarctica. But in about eight days, the passengers became ill with heat. And despite the blockade of the entire ship, others fell ill.

So the ship anchored in Uruguay and eight people with COVID-19 were evacuated to a local hospital. And that’s when everyone on board was tested. Currently, there were a total of 217 passengers. And 128 of them were virus positive. Of the people who tested positive, only 24 had symptoms. This means that 104 passengers (81%) were asymptomatic before the test.

Everyone on board was screened for COVID-19 symptoms. They had their temperature measured and were not allowed if they had recently traveled to China or South Korea.

It may seem trivial, but this cruise took place in mid-March, before the Coronavirus traveled around the world. As a preventive measure, when the first one became sick, we put masks on everyone and checked passengers to the cabin. Everyone who came into contact with the sick patient wore personal protective equipment.

However, despite these precautions, the virus was still spreading quickly and secretly on board.

It is possible that more Americans are infected than we are aware of. But what this study really shows is how serious everyone needs to be to take a coronavirus.
