Bird flu kills 5,000 wild vines in Israel | World News
An outbreak of bird flu in northern Israel has killed about 5,000 wild vines.
The Times of Israel reported that it counted dead birds in the Hula Lake Reserve on Sunday.
It is in the midst of an outbreak of bird flu, in which more than 500,000 chickens and turkeys have been slaughtered.
Every year, tens of thousands of wild vines travel to Israel on their way to Africa. Most stop at Hula Valley, where dead birds are counted.
Staff from the Israel Nature and Parks Authority and the KKL-JNF Jewish National Fund have counted another 250 dead cranes in the Hula Valley outside the reserve, and another 30 have been found elsewhere, the newspaper said.
INPA reported that the disease was believed to have been spread by truck drivers who delivered food from Mochab Margariot to the chicken coop and brought it to the Hula Reserve.
An INPA spokesman told AFP that in addition to dead birds, about 10,000 are believed to be infected.
Uri Naveh, senior INPA scientist, told Newswire that the virus affects Israel each year, but this year’s outbreak is far greater than previously seen.
He said the number of dead cranes was “exceptional.”
The reserve is not open to the public until January 1st.
