Pediatric hospitalization is increasing, but not due to coronavirus
San Diego — Increasing hospitalizations for children with COVID-19, but not necessarily due to the coronavirus.
Dr. John Bradley, responsible for infectious diseases at Rady Children’s Hospital, said more children are testing positive for COVID-19, but not so ill.
“Children are okay with a variant of Omicron,” said Dr. Bradley.
Pediatric patients are being tested for COVID as part of the hospitalization process, and more and more children are becoming aware that they are infected with COVID even if they are not ill. On average, Radiy Children’s Hospital has 20 to 25 COVID-positive children at all times.
“COVID doesn’t matter,” Dr. Bradley explained. “All other viruses that are seen each year, like RSV, are beginning to show influenza, but no child has been hospitalized during the COVID-pneumonia period in the hospital.”
According to Dr. Bradley, doctors are seeing an increase in hospitalizations as children are hospitalized for a variety of reasons.
“You know about cancer, injuries, kidney infections, seizures, and everything else,” he said. “Many children test positive for COVID.”
Dr. Bradley says the Omicron variant is very mild in children.
