Stanford’s new 5-hour DNA sequencing technology sets Guinness World Records

To develop a “mega-sequencing” approach, a team at Stanford University used Oxford Nanopore Technologies and a new DNA analyzer that included 48 sequencing units. Scientists used all 48 flow cells at once to perform long read sequences, injecting subsequent onslaught of genomic data into cloud-based storage systems.
Once in the cloud, the algorithm gives the data a first path, highlighting mutations in an individual’s genes that indicate a potential disease. The research team then performed their own analysis to compare the identified variants with those known to cause the disease.
On average, with this ultra-fast technology, the entire sequencing and diagnostic process took only eight hours, but it’s still not fast enough for Ashley and his team.
