Officials: COVID-19 kills infants in Riverside County

Health officials in Riverside County have announced that the baby died after being infected with COVID-19.

Infants were under one year old and were the youngest virus deaths in the county since the pandemic began, officials said.

According to officials, the baby was rushed to death after being infected with the virus at a local hospital earlier this week. The child’s name and place of residence will not be disclosed, but officials said the infant was from the southwestern part of the county.

“Our thoughts and sympathy are directed at parents, families and others affected by this tragedy,” said Dr. Jeffrey Leon, Public Health Officer, Riverside County. “This loss reminds us that this virus does not distinguish between young and old.”

The county has reported 5,661 deaths caused by the virus since the onset of the pandemic.

Officials added that the majority of deaths are related to people over the age of 30. From February to December, 90% of deaths were unvaccinated residents.

According to officials, only a handful of teens and young adults have died from the virus, and some have underlying health problems. At this time, it is unclear if the baby has any underlying health problems.

The previous youngest death in Riverside County was a 4-year-old child in Western Riverside County who died in August.

According to the county, health officials report that babies under the age of one may be at higher risk of being ill with COVID-19 than children older.
