Starting February 1, Austria will implement a wide range of Covid-19 vaccine directives, including fines for unvaccinated adults.
The government announced in November last year that vaccinations need to be mandated to address the low immunization rates in the country. The first draft of the bill was published in December and the revised draft was published on Monday and is currently in parliament.
According to the latest draft, anyone over the age of 18 living in Austria should be vaccinated against Covid-19. Some groups of people are exempt, including those who are pregnant, those who have recovered from Covid-19 infection (those who are exempt from positive PCR for 180 days), and those who cannot be vaccinated without risking their health.
“Forced vaccination is not abrupt, but a step-by-step approach,” Austrian Prime Minister Karl Nehammer told the public broadcaster ORF on Sunday.
According to Nehammer, no fines will be imposed in the early stages, which will continue until mid-March. Starting March 15, law enforcement will begin checking whether people are in compliance with the new law. For example, check the vaccination status during traffic regulation.
If you do not have a vaccine certificate or tax exemption, you will be fined up to € 600 ($ 685). You can also set a so-called “reminder date”. On this date, people will be notified by letter to be vaccinated.
In the third phase of the mandate, these reminders are followed by a “vaccine date”. Those who have not been fired or tax exempted by then will be fined.
There are two “vaccination days” each year. Each person is fined up to four times a year for a total of € 2,400 ($ 2,741).
According to the Austrian Ministry of Health, the vaccine obligation will continue until 31 January 2024 and will continue to be evaluated until then.
