Continuous doses of hydroxychloroquine and PPE can reduce health care worker COVID-19 risk, according to an ICMR study
Recent research with the World Health Organization (WHO) Lancet Maybe questioned the preventive effects of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in reducing COVID-19 risk, but the Indian Medical Research Council (ICMR) says antimalarial drugs minimize the likelihood of contracting health care workers. It continues to argue that it may have limited new coronavirus-especially when used in combination with personal protective equipment (PPE).

ICMR study recommends maintenance dose
This conclusion is based on the ICMR case-control study and the results are Indian Medical Research Journal (IJMR). This study investigated participants randomly selected from a country-level COVID-19 test data portal managed by the ICMR. Some were COVID-19 positive and others were part of the control group. Participants were given a questionnaire to understand the procedures they carried out and their use of PPE and consumption of HCQ.
On the other hand, studies show that health care workers who perform endotracheal intubation are at a much higher risk of being infected with SARS-CoV-2, and simply taking HCQ did not reduce this risk. On the other hand, the study found that “4 or more maintenance doses of HCQ were associated with a significant reduction in the probability of infection.”
Thus, this study could highlight the fact that there is a dose-response relationship (response is dose-dependent) between the frequency of taking HCQ and the reduction in the number of infections among health care workers. In addition, the findings of this study also showed that “PPE use was independently associated with a reduced probability of being infected with SARS-CoV-2.”
