Kingston — We live in a densely populated area and need preparation to prevent bites and illness. To educate you and your loved ones on how to stay safe from ticks and tick-borne diseases, here is a little bit of information from one of our nurse practitioners, Carory Smith.

Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most common tick-borne disease reported in New Hampshire. Other tick-borne diseases include anaplasmosis and babesiosis. You can be infected with Lyme disease and other bacterial or parasitic infections at the same time. The people most susceptible to infection are those who spend their time in the grassy woods. Chronic medical conditions, immune system disorders, and the elderly are at the highest risk of complications of the disease when infected.
Anaplasmosis is a disease caused by the bacterium Anaplasma phagocytofium and is transmitted to people by infected deer ticks carried by voles, deer, and mice. Symptoms of anaplasmosis include fever, headache, chills, nausea, muscle aches, and, rarely, a rash.
Babesiosis is a rare, serious, and sometimes deadly tick-borne illness caused by various types of Babesia (microscopic parasites) that affect red blood cells. Symptoms include fever, extreme fatigue, dehydration, confusion, and anemia that lasts days to months.
Let’s Practice: Only you can prevent tick bites. Mite is prone to being stung just by being outside, but there are some steps that can greatly reduce the chance of being stung. See the list below to see what you can do to keep yourself safe.
• Wear light-colored clothing to help you find mites on your clothing.
• Wear insect repellents when you go out (greater than 20% Diet is great for combating skin mites; permethrin is used to coat clothing and shoes).
• Put your pants in your socks and your shirt in your pants. This may seem silly, but it can significantly reduce the ability of mites to contact the skin.
• After spending time outdoors, wash your clothes in boiling water or in a “high” dryer for at least 5 minutes to kill any ticks on your clothes.
• Wear a cap to prevent hair from falling on your head.
• Perform a “tick check” every 2-3 hours when you are outside. Especially when you’re inside or when your bed is ready.
• Share your living space and see what animals go out.
Self-treatment of tick bite
I was bitten by a tick. So what? The main safety procedures for removing and treating tick bites are:
• As mites suffer, they suffer from mites and secrete infectious fluids (increased risk of disease).
• Grasp the mouth of the tick with tweezers as close as possible to the skin, being careful not to squeeze, crush, or puncture the tick’s body. The goal is to delete the entire tick as is.
