COVID-19 vaccine manufacturers are updating their shots to better match Omicron in case global health authorities determine that changes are needed.
Omicrons are more likely to cause infections in vaccinated individuals than in previous variants, but it is not yet clear if a change in the vaccine recipe will be ordered. Among the issues that regulators are considering, some of the first places to face the Omicron surge have already seen the decline of mutants — and will the next subspecies that emerge resemble Omicron? There is no way to know if they are substantially different.
The original vaccine still provides excellent protection against serious illness and death. Studies in the United States and elsewhere have shown that adding booster doses enhances its protection and increases the likelihood of avoiding mild infections.

A new US study enrolls up to 1,420 healthy adults aged 18-55 years to test Omicron-based shots updated for use in boosters or primary vaccinations. Researchers will investigate the safety of the conditioned vaccine and how it stimulates the immune system compared to the original shot.

In this study, unvaccinated volunteers are enrolled and vaccinated three times with an omicron-based vaccine.
Pfizer plans to administer 4 billion vaccines in 2022, and said Tuesday that if a version adapted for Omicron is needed, the amount is expected to remain the same.
